Acupuncture is an ancient form of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) that involves the insertion of needles into specific points on the body to achieve a therapeutic effect. Acupressure is nearly identical to Acupuncture but applies pressure to these points rather than needles.
As it is based in Chinese Medicine, the approach of Acupuncture is decidedly Eastern, and thus fails to be sufficiently described by Western thoughts and approaches. Whereas Western medicine approaches disease with pharmaceuticals, surgeries, and such, Eastern medicine sees disease as an imbalance within the system. Similarly to Chiropractic, Acupuncture treats the body as a whole, recognizing the body’s tendency to self-repair and maintain, if only allowed to do so. Thus, Acupuncture seeks to restore balance to the many systems of the body using the nerves in the skin to influence the deeper structures and systems.
As ancient as this art is, there are several schools of thought when it comes to the application of Acupuncture. The Gold Standard is TCM, which is where the majority of recognized Acupuncture Points have been defined and codified. It is well known for its accuracy, consistency, and repeatability. The Japanese style uses these same points, while using fewer needles, relying on the body to direct the energy rather than the detailed road map that TCM uses. Auricular Acupuncture focuses on points within the ear, useful for addictions, mental fogginess, anxieties, etc, and was codified in France.
We use a combination of these methods and more, seeking to use as few needles as possible to do the job, so long as it is done correctly and well.
